What a roofing square actually is
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface, measured along the slope, not along the ground. The unit exists because roof pricing needs to move by shingle bundle, roll of underlayment, and labor line item regardless of whether the roof is a simple gable or a dozen-facet hip roof. Quoting a job in squares lets a contractor or estimator compare two very differently shaped roofs on the same scale.
Squares apply to the roof surface, not the footprint of the building. A ranch house and a two-story home can sit on the same footprint and still carry very different square counts once the roof pitch is factored in, which is the calculation the rest of this page walks through.
Square feet to squares conversion table
Once you have a roof area in square feet, the conversion to squares is division by 100. Nothing else changes. The table below covers common roof sizes.

This table converts a known roof area to squares. It does not account for pitch. If all you have is a footprint measured on the ground, use the pitch multiplier in the next section first.
From footprint to roof area: the pitch multiplier
A footprint is the ground-plan area of the building, the outline you would get from a plat map or a tape measure walked around the perimeter. A sloped roof always covers more surface area than the footprint underneath it, because the roof plane is tilted rather than flat. The amount of extra area depends on the pitch.
The formula: pitch multiplier equals the square root of (rise squared plus run squared), divided by run. For a roof pitch expressed as rise over 12 (the standard convention), run is always 12. Multiply the footprint area by this factor to get true roof area, then divide by 100 to get squares.
Common pitch multipliers, derived from that formula:

For a roof with more than one pitch, apply the correct multiplier to each pitched section separately, then sum the areas before converting to squares. Using one multiplier for the whole roof will misstate area on any roof with mixed pitches.
Worked example
Take a house with a footprint of 2,400 sq ft and a roof pitch of 6/12.
- Get the footprint area
Footprint area, measured at the building outline, is 2,400 sq ft.
- Identify the pitch
The roof pitch is 6/12, which carries a multiplier of 1.118 (see the table above).
- Apply the pitch multiplier
2,400 sq ft x 1.118 = 2,683.2 sq ft of actual sloped roof area.
- Divide by 100 to get squares
2,683.2 / 100 = 26.832, reported as 26.8 squares. Material ordering typically rounds up from this base figure separately as a waste allowance, which is not part of the sq ft to squares conversion itself.
Where this calculation goes wrong
- Treating the footprint as the roof area
The footprint is a ground projection. Except on a dead-flat roof, the actual roof surface is always larger, and skipping the pitch multiplier undercounts every pitched roof.
- Using one multiplier on a multi-pitch roof
A roof with a steep front elevation and a shallow rear addition needs each section calculated with its own multiplier before the areas are summed.
- Rounding the footprint or the multiplier too early
Rounding before multiplying compounds error across a large roof area. Carry full precision through the multiplication, then round the final square count.
- Confusing base squares with material squares
Waste factor for cuts, hips, and valleys is added on top of the base sq ft to squares conversion, not folded into it. Keep the two numbers separate in the file.
