Rise, run, and pitch notation
Roof pitch describes slope as rise over run: the number of inches a roof surface climbs vertically for every 12 inches it travels horizontally. A 6/12 roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of run. A 12/12 roof rises 12 inches for every 12 inches of run, a 45 degree slope. Run is standardized at 12 inches in residential roofing, so pitch is almost always written as a single number over 12, such as 4/12, 8/12, or 12/12.
Pitch is not the same thing as the pitch multiplier. Pitch is the rise/run ratio itself. The multiplier is a separate number, derived from that ratio, that adjusters and estimators apply to a flat footprint to get true roof surface area.
The pitch multiplier formula
The pitch multiplier is the length of the sloped surface divided by the length of the flat run beneath it: multiplier = sqrt(rise squared + run squared) / run.
Because roofing run is standardized at 12 inches, the formula simplifies to multiplier = sqrt(rise squared + 144) / 12, where rise is the number in the X/12 pitch notation. The same rise value, run through arctan(rise / 12), gives the roof angle in degrees.
Every value in the table below is computed directly from those two formulas and rounded to three decimals for the multiplier and one decimal for degrees. Nothing in the table is looked up from a separate chart; it is the formula applied to each whole-number rise from 1 to 12, then at two-unit steps from 14 to 24, which covers the pitches that actually appear on residential roofs.

Multiplier = sqrt(rise squared + 144) / 12, rounded to three decimals. Degrees = arctan(rise / 12), rounded to one decimal. Pitches beyond 24/12 exist but are rare on residential roofs and follow the same formula.
How pitch changes roof area
Actual roof area equals footprint area multiplied by the pitch multiplier: area = footprint x multiplier. A footprint here means the flat, plan-view area of the roof as measured from above, before slope is applied.
Example: a footprint of 2,000 square feet at 6/12 pitch (multiplier 1.118) works out to 2,236 square feet of actual roof surface, or 22.36 roofing squares at 100 square feet per square. The same footprint at 10/12 (multiplier 1.302) works out to 2,604 square feet, about 26.04 squares. Nothing about the footprint changed; the extra 368 square feet of material and labor exists purely because the slope is steeper.
This is why two roofs with identical footprints can carry different material line-item totals on the estimate: the multiplier, not the footprint, is doing the work. Steep-slope and high-roof charges
Most estimating platforms, including Xactimate®, carry separate line items for steep-slope labor and for high-roof access, priced apart from the base roofing material and labor items. These charges are keyed to thresholds defined in the platform's current price list, not to a single number that applies everywhere or every year.
The practical implication for an adjuster or estimator: confirm the roof's actual pitch, using the formula above or a delivered pitch value, before deciding whether a steep or high charge applies, and check the current price list for the trigger threshold rather than assuming one. A pitch that is one row off in the table above, say 7/12 read as 6/12, can be the difference between an estimate that includes a steep charge and one that omits it.
Measuring pitch in the field
- Use a pitch gauge or a torpedo level with a 12 inch reference against an accessible rafter tail, gable end, or ridge board
Reading rise directly off a 12 inch run gives the X/12 number with no conversion needed.
- Take the reading on a section of roof that represents the main slope, not a porch, dormer, or valley
Different facets on the same roof can carry different pitches, and a report or estimate should reflect each facet's own value.
- Cross-check the field reading against the pitch stated on a delivered measurement report before keying line items
A one-line discrepancy between a field guess and the documented pitch changes both the area multiplier and any steep-slope charge.
- If access is not safe, order a report rather than estimate pitch from the ground
Ground-level pitch estimates are frequently off by one or two rows in the table, which compounds across the whole roof's area.
